Penpals / Relations épistolaires: Montreal – Glasgow

We are looking for two Montreal based artists to take part in a sharing of ideas and approaches around questions of wellbeing in artistic practice with artists based in Glasgow, Scotland.

Take Me Somewhere (TMS) is an International Biennial Festival and year round sector support organisation that exists to position Scotland as a place to create and experience radical performance. Website / Instagram

DESCRIPTION

What are we talking about when we talk about care or wellbeing in performance practices? What does/can dance do beyond the transactional Western performance model? How can we widen the artistic discourse around wellbeing and care? Is there a necessary relation between artistic practice and wellbeing and care? How can we care for art? How can it care for us?

In collaboration with Take Me Somewhere Festival, this second edition of Penpals / Rélations épistolaires invites artists living in Montreal whose creative practices engage with aspects of ‘wellbeing’ to be matched with Glasgow artists in a transcontinental correspondence. Each Montréal artist will be matched with one Glasgow based artist to exchange using video letters to share thoughts, reflections and questions surrounding how performance can address wellbeing whether that be ecological wellbeing, community wellbeing or personal wellbeing.

Our hope with this project is that we can shine a light on the research that artists are doing locally and bring it into an international conversation.

  • Ecological wellbeing could refer to the harmonious relationship between people and their ecological system, integrating current and future generations into an equilibrium with all of life’s species.
  • Community wellbeing could be the combination of social, economic, environmental, cultural, spiritual and political conditions identified by individuals and their communities as essential for them to flourish and fulfil their potential.
  • Personal wellbeing could be our day to day emotional experiences and our wider mental and physical wellbeing.

This three-month project will match 2 artists from each city into co-mentor pairs. The artists will begin their correspondence through video-letters, through which each artist interchange roles of mentor and mentee, knower and not-knower. After the first month, the penpals will be invited to explore other forms of correspondence as their relationship evolves. In April 2023, CCOV and TMS will host a public discussion, in-person and livestream, with all the participants from both cities to debrief and share reflections of their penpal exchanges.

The correspondence period will be from January 16  – April 20  2023, and the public event will be 29 April 2023.

This project is an evolving model for international artist exchanges, reducing the carbon impact whilst the artists stay landed within their families, communities and territories. We are interested in exploring how a formalised and spacious correspondence supports listening and reflection
